How to travel to Tartu

By Bus 

The Tallinn bus station is the main long-distance bus station of Tallinn, Estonia. The bus station is located in the south-eastern part of the city centre (Lastekodu street 46).

Buses to Tartu leave almost every 30 minutes from 7 AM until 11 PM. Most of the busses also stop at Tallinn Airport (you can board them from there). Comfortable Lux Express buses are equipped with a toilet, free Wi-Fi and power outlets. Tickets can be purchased from a ticket office inside the bus station, from the bus driver, or on the internet in advance. The trip to Tartu takes 2.5 hours.

Tartu Bus Station is located in the city centre, and there are comfortable direct bus connections to larger centres in Estonia as well as across the border (eg. Riga, Latvia).

By Train 

The train station (Balti jaam) is just outside the Tallinn Old Town and near the seaport. It can be reached by taxi or tram from the seaport. Trains from Tallinn to Tartu operate about ten times a day. Express trains take about 2 hours to reach Tartu and regular trains 2 hours 20 min. Tartu Railway Station is located in a historical station building 1.5 km from the city centre, and daily train service operates on the routes to Tallinn.

The fast and modern trains are spacious, child-friendly and equipped with many special comforts. Tickets can be purchased online, aboard the train, and from the Railway Station in Tallinn. Additional information and tickets here.

From the Tartu railway station, the city center can be reached by catching free electric bus No 25 or regular bus No 20. You can also take a taxi, however, a healthy stroll or riding with our Smart Bike also presents the opportunity to do some sightseeing on the way.

By Car 

The distance from Tallinn to Tartu is 186 km and the drive takes less than 2.5 hours. Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, is the biggest centre in South Estonia and at the same time the junction of the main national roads. City traffic in Tartu is calm, friendly and welcoming. Hitchhiking

If you can’t find suitable travel option above you can of course hitchhike to Tartu (if you feel adventurous). Roads in the Estonia are safe, but please, don’t cross our eastern borders!
